Welcome to The Rail Trail Information Centre
The Otago Central Rail Trail is New Zealand's first ever Rail Trail and is
one of the most popular recreational activities to do with friends and
family. The 150km walking and cycling track travels through the heart of
Central Otago between Middlemarch and Clyde.
Where to Start
You can start your rail trail experience from either Clyde or Middlemarch
or any location along the trail. You can spend as little as an afternoon
having a taste of the trail or a 6 day full experience of Central Otago and
all it has to offer. Whether you wish to have a taste of the rail trail or a full
rail trail experience we are available to assist you with bike hire,
accommodaton, daily bag transfers and transport services along the
way.
A Season for Everyone
The Rail Trail can be completed all year round, each season offers a
unique experience. Summer offers long hot days with the temperature
often above 30 degress celsius where a swim in the nearest watering
hole is often a must. Summer offers more hours of daylight for exploring
Central Otago's hidden treasures.
Autumn offers a beautiful array of golden colours as the leaves turn and
begin to fall. Autumn is always a favourite and booking well in advance is
essential.
Winter offers snow-capped mountains where frosty mornings make way
for calm, still days. Cycling through the timeless landsacpes is like
cycling through a winter wonderland. During Winter make sure you visit
New Zealand's ice capital, Naseby. Naseby boasts a number of winter
activities including ice luging, ice skating and curling. The slopes of
Queenstown and Wanaka are only an hours drive from Clyde and are
perfect for a spot of skiing before or after your rail trail experience.
With Spring comes new life on the rail trail. Green leaves, green grass,
daffodils and colouful blossoms fill the landscapes while bouncing lambs
play happily beside the rail trail.
Planning Your Rail Trail Trip
Decide where you want to start and finsh The hightest point on the Rail Trail is halfway at Wedderburn,
so whichever end you start at you are going to have a gentle
incline at times. Wind comes and goes and can blow from
any direction at times. We believe that the best direction is
the one that suits your travel plans
How many days do you want to spend
cycling the rail trail
You can spend as little or as many days as you wish cycling
the Otago Central Rail Trail. If cycling the entire rail trail we
recommend cycling the trail over 5 days for a more enjoyable
experience. Cycling the rail trail is a fantastic experience but
exploring the quaint townships and taking part in off-trail
activities is what makes your rail trail experience. Cycling the
trail over 5 days with a rest day in the middle is the ultimate
rail trail experience.
Where do you want to stay
The rail trail offers a large selection of accommodation from
backpackers to luxury lodges ranging in proce from $50.00 per
person to $150.00 per person. Please view our
accommodation page for more information and bookings for
accommodation along the rail trail.
How do I get to the Rail Trail From Dunedin it is an hours drive to Middlemarch or you can
choose to take the specatular Taieri Gorge Railway Train or
there are shuttles that run up and down the rail trail daily.
From Queenstown it is a one hour drive through the famous
wine growing region of Gibbston Valley and the
winding Kawarau Gorge to Clyde. There are also shuttles that
